Therapy for the LGBTQ+ Community in Utah County
Finding the right Therapist for you
Its no longer a surprise to anyone that finding a new therapist isn't easy. In the middle of Utah, it can be even more difficult when you're a member of the queer community.
You still deserve to find a therapist you're comfortable with!
Our agents (and reception staff!) have gathered some resources for you to use in your search. And remember that our help as local insurance agents is always free—whether you are our client or not. Text/call us at 801-609-8699 if you have any questions.
Things to remember while looking for a therapist:
You don't have to stick with the first therapist you find. Not everyone will be the right fit for you, and that's okay!
Start to learn about your preferences: Do you like to meet in-person or virtually? Do you prefer one-on-one therapy or group meetings/classes? etc.
Therapy can get expensive if your insurance doesn't cover it. Make sure you are looking for in-network therapists, or talk to us about switching insurances to cover a therapist you prefer.
As your local agents, we can help you make sure the therapist you do find is in your insurance network
Our Recommendations for Therapists
The following therapists, companies, and websites are people we have personally worked with or used ourselves in the past.
First, we suggest checking out the list for The LGBTQ+ Affirmative Psychotherapist Guild of Utah. You are able to filter this list by location, insurance coverage, and even therapist specialties. Through this list we have found two great locations in Utah County to recommend for queer people looking for an affirming counselor.
On the list we found Advanced Awareness Counseling located in Provo, Sandy, and Salt Lake City. They have counselors who do either in-office or virtual appointments. We are most familiar with the Provo office, and they are great! If you are looking for a therapist you can talk to specifically about your journey with gender or sexuality, this is definitely a good place to check out!
Also from the above list, we found True Self Counseling, which recently relocated to Pleasant Grove. Their counselors do in-office and virtual meetings for child, teen, and adult therapy. They have several counselors who work with the LGBTQ+ community. This is a great place to go if you are looking for help with mental health issues from an affirming counselor.
Other Options
If you've been looking for a therapist, you've probably heard of Encircle (if you haven't, check them out!). They have houses in Provo, Salt Lake City, and St. George, with a house in Heber coming soon. Along with therapy appointments, they do group activity nights for all ages, focusing on kids and teens. They also welcome kids and teens to come hang out at the house throughout the week to do homework or meet new people. Check out their website to set up a tour of one of the houses.
The Encircle therapists do both in-house and virtual appointments, but they are often fully booked. The easiest way to see if there is an opening is to email admin@encircletherapy.com. Let them know you are looking for a therapist and are wondering about appointment availability.
Utah LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce
Utah Avenue Insurance is a member of the Utah LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, so we've met many of the business owners listed in the directory. As of yet, we haven't met any that we wouldn't recommend! You can check out the directory here and check under the healthcare section. Most of the businesses listed in this directory will be located closer to Salt Lake City.
